In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media productions?

A Thriller is a very difficult genre to define as there are so many sub-genres which branch out from it such as Crime/Thriller or Psychological Thrillers. I think my Thriller definitely contains many psychological aspects for example using two cameras created a divide between real life and the flashbacks which also added a psychological feel to it.

To help me define what makes a thriller  I used my Thriller opening reviews of The Happening and Memento to create a Wordle of the main conventions:

The first 5 minutes of a thriller should aim to grab the attention of the viewer in order to keep them concentrated throughout the film. I researched on the internet the conventions of a Thriller opening to again create a Wordle showing the main conventions of a Thriller opening.

Certain conventions which many thrillers use are;

  • Establishing shots, Close up shots, reaction shots and wide angle- environment introducing shots.
  • Enticing sounds to attract audience, sounds to create suspense. Both diegetic and non- diegetic sounds are often used in thriller openings.
  • A suitable Mise-en-scene to show the audience exactly where they are, or a suitable Mise-en-scene so the audience does not know where they are or what they are looking at.
  • Editing is important so everything is attractive and appropriately pitched.
All of the above, is done correctly will give an effective narrative within the opening which should keep the veiwers attentative for the duration of the film.
Proof that my thriller opening conventions match the general trend of thriller opening conventions;
Camera Shots;

  • Establishing shot-
This pan shot is shown after the drug is taken to emphasise the feelings and visuals the characters are feelings, so this clearly establishes a different frame of mind to the viewer.

  • Close up shot-
This close up shot effectively expresses the worried emotion of the character, this shot could also be classified as a reaction shot as the worried face is a reaction to being pressured to take a drug.

  • Wide angle – environmental shot-
This wide pan shot clearly introduces the viewer to the surrounding environment (a woodland lake).

  • High angle shot-

Our Thriller opening also contains a high angle shot which clearly shows the struggle which takes place. High angle shots were not mentioned in the convention of an average Thriller so this shot type possible challenges the conventions a real media production.

Sound;

  • Eerie piano gives a thrilling introduction emphasises something other than a standard fishing lake and gives negative connotations.
  • When the second pan shot is shown (after the drug is taken) a deep growling sound is put in to add further effect to the differentiation of the sober and drugged characters.
  • A lighting strike is included when Steven is working in the office/study to give hints of darkness. Although at the time we thought this was a good idea, looking back on it now it does seem slightly 'cheesy'.
Momento used a range of building tembres in the first two minuits to create a build up effect to the intro which was very effective, whereas we kept uors clean and simple with a decent eerie piano riff.

Mise en scene;

  • Fishing equipment was used to emphasise the 'fishing scene'.
  • In office/study scenes; books, pens and other general stationary was added to further improve the mise-en-scene.
Mise en scene us critically important when introducing the veiwer as they will want to know what they are looking at which is why confusing mis-en-scenes can often have a hooking effect; as the veiwe wants to find out what they have just seen. Our mise en scene is clear but has confusing hints which keeps the veiwer hooked.
Editing;
  • There was a huge amount of editing done in order to create this production such as cropping, positioning, editing the contrast and sound and i will talk further about this in the technologies section.

Our Thriller contains many effective shot-types such as high angle, low angle and moving shots. Combining dim shots and high saturation shots has a huge impact on the viewer as the viewer’s eyes have to quickly adjust, this gives a true divide between real time and past tense.

Here is a video of a member of our target audience commenting on the conventions we used;

Our Thriller combines many extreme feelings when taken seriously (not viewed by friend etc…) feelings that are felt are of darkness, depression, sorrow for Ryan’s situation, confusion, euphoria and tension in the ‘peak points’.

I am now going to compare the conventions we used with conventions of The Happening (another film in the same genre with similar conventions);

Tension can often fluctuate in thrillers and the conventions representing this tension are similar to those of other Thrillers such as The Happening. Unusual lighting and a different contrast is used in both of these shots but we have used a high-angle shot and the producers of the happening have used a close up.

Both of the shots above intend to clearly show the depressive, worried faces of the characters. The conventions used to do this in both shots is the use of close-ups. Close ups are an effective convention to present emotions as there is nothing else to look at other than that emotion.

The feelings felt in our Thriller are very similar to the feelings you would feel from many other famous Thrillers such as Memento and The Happening this shows we were effective at matching the Thriller genre with our conventions. These thrillers also have psychological hints to them as with my product, memento also shares different time scales which has a huge impact on the viewer. The main feelings felt in both my product, Memento and The Happening are confusion, tension, depression and darkness.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Vertigo films (uk) would be a very appropriate company to distribute our Thriller. Firstly Vertigo Films have previously produced and distributed films with a similar theme, which is how drugs can often have severe side effects. I believe they would be very interested in distributing our film as a follow on from their previous film ‘Shrooms’ the storyline is unlike ours as ours has a much more detailed plot which is what I believe they were missing from there film ‘Shrooms’.

Vertigo films are not a huge company, however I believe they will be perfect for us as  i’m sure they will also appreciate the complexity and popularity of the type of Thriller we have produced. Vertigo films produce a range of genres but there film ‘Shrooms’ is a Psychological Thriller which contains similar conventions to my Thriller. ‘Shrooms’ was very popular within the university scene which means their company will already have a fairly good reputation from the target audience, which means they will be able to distribute o ur film directly aimed at this audience.

The benefits of using and independent British producer over an American, large scale producer would be that the British producer will have much more effective knowledge when it comes to addressing or advertising to our target audience as our Thriller contains social factors that relate quite closely to the UK. It will also be much easier to secure a deal with a local producer over a huge multimillion dollar American producer.

How did you attract/address your audience?

This Thriller will catch the eye of my target audience as films with this theme are not usually seen in the public eye, society tends to try and hide problems of drug use rather than address them which is why our Thriller will stand out from the rest (it is addressing a problem most are too scared to address).

Admittedly the main reason most of our audience wanted to watch our Thriller was because the Thriller was made by us (people their own age) so this caught the interests of many young people like us which consume mass amounts of media.

Another reason many viewers were attracted to our Thriller was because many deemed the subject of our Thriller (Side effects of Drugs) as  unusual or inappropriate, many would not of proceeded with this idea which adds individualism to the Thriller.

After the Thriller was produced i addressed my audience by posting the video on Facebook (a social network site) in order to get some decent feedback directly from my target audience;

From posting this video on Facebook i got some very useful feedback, most of which was positive, here are the comments from the Video;

Alexia Martins good job, and nice effects ;)

Kel Pinchin Good camera angles, nice effects. Multiple cuts in places really was effective. Nice confusing opening to a psychological thriller, will keep people watching to see what happens.

Emily 'Chubs' Dougall i like the variety of camera shots and effects, i also like the music as it works really well with the piece. i also think its a good plot and a good story to open a thriller with. To improve maybe do more with your titles? other than that its reaaaaaaaaaaaal good :)

Amy King Good variety of camera angles, and effects used... I like the birds-eye view shot, I think that works really well. Good start to a thriller, keeps people guessing and wanting to watch more to find out what happens

Callum James Cole It's good dude. Works really well.

Marc Bull Fryer That's Gd man

All of the comments above clearly show that our target audience recognises the effectiveness of the conventions that we used.

Filming in two time scales also attracted the interest of veiwers as it adds more to the storyline and adds hints of confusion. Another attarction was concept of a psychadelic thriller which is quite un-heard of  to many. Also the wide range of effects used in the product has a very enticing, attractive effect on the veiwer.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I truly believe that the full product we have produced is an enormous improvement from our preliminary task mainly due to the ideas behind it and the filming as the editing has remained fairly consistent.
Our prelim was quite effective at grabbing the viewer’s attention but it had the simplest plot, which was a ‘goody’ and a ‘baddy’ in a conflict over ‘the antidote’. I admit this plot was thought up in 30 minutes whereas the full product took weeks of detailed thought and planning to create a very interesting plot.
The filming in our prelim was fairly effective but we had not yet learnt all of the rules which we then learnt from the feedback on our prelim. We did not put much thought into the mise-en-scene which was what let it down. You couldn’t take an armed conflict scene seriously in a school room. The mise-en-scene in our final product was precisely planned which created an environment with many props to create the exact shots we intended.
What we learned from our preliminary task;
  • 180 degree rule- From our prelim we recognised that it is vital to stick to this rule in order to create an effective product.
  • Composition-  Our composition as a whole had much more of an impact on the veiwer than in our prelim.
  • Sound- The soundtrack to our prelim made the viewers think they where about to visit a rave, this shows our soundtrack for our prelim was innapropriate. This is what drove Steven to compose a very effective peice of music to accompany our Thriller.
So on the whole our prelim was a very usefull pilot test for our full product as we made many improvement which would not of been recognised otherwise.

Who would be the audience for your media product ?

The target audience for my Thriller is approximately 18-28 year olds. I have chosen this age group firstly because some of the content such as drug use is not appropriate for anyone under the age of 18 and will probably be less interesting to anyone above the age of 28 in general.

The Thriller was generally aimed at the university scene as people at university are often mixing with people like the characters represented in this film (people experimenting with drugs). This thriller will really affect some people at university as they may be having similar experiences and not realise that these experiences can have serious side effects.

I came to the conclusion that my product should be distributed as an 18 from researching on the bbfc website. My product contains drug use, swearing, violence and in the full film it will contain scenes of a sexual nature this means my thriller is definitely not suitable to anyone under the age of 18.

A typical member of my target audience would be a 19 year old male who has recently discovered  the different aspects and dangers of life. The ideal member would of grown up in the UK in a middle class area, a city or a reasonably large town and would probably consume media types such as Facebook, Twitter or Youtube and would pay attention to British TV and news.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In the process of constructing this product I have learnt how to use many new forms of technology which I could never use before. Here are the following technologies I have mastered:

 Imovie was the most vital piece of technology i have learned to use whilst constructing this product as it allowed me to have full control of editing and saving my production.  From this i have learned how to completely manipulate and re-arrange footage in order to make an effective Prelim and Thriller. Idvd allows you to insert transitions between shots such as fade to black or cross blur which makes it run very smoothly. Imovie allowed us to cancell background noise and add non diegetic sound over the top as well as varying the volume at different parts of the Thriller which helps add tension. Imovie also gave me the oppotinity to add a range of effects to the shots such as High Contrast or 'Vignette'(as used in the first pan shot).

 idvd  helped me burn my product to disc, this made distribution easier and seemed to validate it as a product.

Audacity was the program we used to edit our soundtrack; we recorded the self composed soundtrack straight onto my laptop using audacity and then used the editing feature to cancell out any background noise and to smooth the sound. This program helped me record and edit an effective soundtrack

All of the software and programs above have effectively helped my produce my final product, previously I would not of known how to edit and create a film but Imovie and Idvd make it simple for independent film producers such as myself to produce high quality films. I did not only learn how to use software when creating this product but I also drastically improved my filming skills, ensuring smooth shots and effective angles.

How does your media production represent particular social groups?

On a whole our media production represents a very wide-spread social group which is the younger generation of today. Throughout the years many of the younger generation have experimented with drugs which is why I believe this film will have a large audience intrigued by this film.
But our characters are also portrayed to represent specific social groups. The character I played (the drug dealer) is portrayed as a criminal, troubled-male teenager. The camera shots show this character pulling suspicious faces to enhance this.

The other two Characters where portrayed to be fairly normal teenagers who have picked up a ‘friend’ who is involved with drugs. These characters are effectively portrayed as the victims of peer pressure. The camera shots show close ups of worreid faces on these characters to further emphasise the fact that they do not want to proceed.

The setting did not perticually represent any specific social group apart from maybe that of a fisherman, these youths are just out on a day out fishing for fun and would not be considerd as 'fishermen'.
